Mississippi - 1955

40 x 30 / SOLD

Sometimes I take long breaks from the news….and other times, I’m glued to what’s happening in current events. I’ve been on a long break from the news. I recently jumped back in (about a month or so ago). I believe what I felt through news was spilling over into this painting. I didn’t start it with the idea in mind to paint Emmett Till, I just let the brush move. After stepping back, I added a face…After stepping back again, my eyes watered up. After finishing the painting, I knew it had to be named Mississippi 1955. Sometimes the body knows before the mind…it definitely has a longer memory than the mind. Perhaps I was suppose to honor this 14 year old brotha long ago, perhaps I can never do it proper justice, either way….all I know, is what I feel.
